Always use the word 'Africa' or 'Darkness' or 'Safari' in your title. Subtitles may include the words 'Zanzibar', 'Masai', 'Zulu', 'Zambezi', 'Congo', 'Nile', 'Big', 'Sky', 'Shadow', 'Drum', 'Sun' or 'Bygone'. Also useful are words such as 'Guerrillas', 'Timeless', 'Primordial' and 'Tribal'. Note that 'People' means Africans who are not black, while 'The People' means black Africans.

Never have a picture of a well-adjusted African on the cover of your book, or in it, unless that African has won the Nobel Prize. An AK-47, prominent ribs, naked breasts: use these. If you must include an African, make sure you get one in Masai or Zulu or Dogon dress.

In your text, treat Africa as if it were one country. It is hot and dusty with rolling grasslands and huge herds of animals and tall, thin people who are starving. Or it is hot and steamy with very short people who eat primates. Don't get bogged down with precise descriptions. Africa is big: fifty-four countries, 900 million people who are too busy starving and dying and warring and emigrating to read your book. The continent is full of deserts, jungles, highlands, savannahs and many other things, but your reader doesn't care about all that, so keep your descriptions romantic and evocative and unparticular.

Make sure you show how Africans have music and rhythm deep in their souls, and eat things no other humans eat. Do not mention rice and beef and wheat; monkey-brain is an African's cuisine of choice, along with goat, snake, worms and grubs and all manner of game meat. Make sure you show that you are able to eat such food without flinching, and describe how you learn to enjoy it?because you care.

Taboo subjects: ordinary domestic scenes, love between Africans (unless a death is involved), references to African writers or intellectuals, mention of school-going children who are not suffering from yaws or Ebola fever or female genital mutilation.

Makes me wonder about my book selection concerning Africa...

My searches for african writers have stopped with Nigerian (?) writer who won a Nobel prize once (Wole Soyinka) and Chinua Achebe but never really read a book from either of them and a fair amount of white african writers: Coetzee, Fuller etc... Maybe the romantic picture of Africa is more appealing. What a bad thing for someone who soon (hopefully) is in possession of a Masters in African Studies...

Hey, below you can see some pictures of what I've been up to lately. First Berlin, then Fasnacht and finally visiting my Grandma again. And now I'm back to the books again.. Learning for my final exam..

Hey, hier ein Auszug von was ich die letzten Wochen so gemacht habe. Äusserst spontane Stippvisite nach Berlin (Lisa fragte mich am Donnerstag und Freitag abend waren die Sachen gepackt und 4.27 Samstag morgen nach einer durchzechten Nacht im Fame gings los nach Nürnberg u Berlin mit Mitfahrgelegenheit.de). Danach kurz an die Fasnacht, die ich mit dem Berlinbesuch glücklicherweise fast gänzlich umschiffen konnte (Ich wohne zwar in Basel und mag die Fasnacht grundsätzlich ja auch, aber wenn man dazu gezwungen wird, ist es nicht mehr so lustig). Danach Frühlingsputz bei der Oma.... Ja und nun wieder zurück in Basel und weiterlernen für meine Abschlussprüfungen... Yeah...

Gaiser Dorfkirche. Ausserrhoden ist protestantisch. Hm eigentlich noch lustig. Mein Polnisches Grossmami war protestantin in Polen, und mein schweizer Grossmami ist Katholikin im Appenzell Ausserrhoden :)

zu einer grossangelegten fr?hlingsputzaktion :) hat noch spass gemacht. war danach aber ziemlich geschafft

die waren auch ganz gut. hab aber den namen vergessen 

d schlyffstai. einer der b?nggler ist ein kolleg von mir. traf sich also ganz gut, dass wir ihn auch noch live erleben konnten.

Am Mittwoch als ich von Berlin zur?ckkam, gings am Abend doch noch schnell an die Fasnacht. Ich wollte die Schnitzelb?nke im Radio h?ren, aber die brachten nur ganz wenige. Das hat Anita und mich aufgeregt, so sind wir kurzfristig doch noch in die Stadt aufgebrochen um das Ganze 1 zu 1 zu erleben.

Der Bundespr?sident war auch an diesem Konzert. Horst K?hler. Mit vielen Securities rundherum

Abends ein Konzert in der neuen Nationalgalerie. Konzert mit Cellist und VJ 

Potsdamer Platz. Alles neue Geb?ude. Alles w?chst in Berlin. Hier ging fr?her die Mauer durch...

Im Tacheles. Alternative Kunstszene ist hier sesshaft 

Originaler Seitenturm der Synagoge in der Oranienburgerstrasse. Die Synagoge wurde w?hrend der Reichskristallnacht auch Opfer der Nazist?rmer. Sp?ter wurde sie von Bomben zerst?rt, so dass sie schlussendlich zum gr?ssten Teil abgebrochen werden musste wegen Sicherheitsgr?nden. Heute ist der Vorderteil, der Strasse hingewendet wieder restauriert. Die neuen Teile mit hellerem Sichtbackstein, dass der Unterschied zwischen neu und alt sichtbar ist. Auch die Glasfenster haben noch alte Farbglasst?ckchen drin. Sieht aus wie ein Puzzle mit vielen fehlenden Teilen. Der Vorderteil der Synagoge wird als Museum gebraucht. Der Oberteil beinhaltet einen Versammlungsraum, der immer noch in Benutzung ist.
